Abstract We present a syntax for representing human gestures using rule sets that correspond to the basic spatial and temporal components of an action. These individual rules form primitives that, although conceptually simple on their own, can be combined both simultaneously and in sequence to form sophisticated gestural interactions. Along with a graphical user interface for custom gesture creation, this approach was incorporated into the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit as a recognition module (FAAST-R). This toolkit can either be used to facilitate the development of motion-based user interfaces or to repurpose existing closed-source applications and games by mapping body motions to keyboard and mouse events. Thus, this work represents an important step towards making gestural interaction more accessible for practitioners, researchers, and hobbyists alike.

Adapting user interfaces for gestural interaction with the flexible action and articulated skeleton toolkit

We present the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), a middleware software framework for integrating full-body interaction with virtual environments, video games, and other user interfaces. This toolkit provides a complete end-to-end solution that includes a graphical user interface for custom gesture creation, sensor configuration, skeletal tracking, action recognition, and...

KIB: Simplifying Gestural Instrument Creation Using Widgets

The Microsoft Kinect is a popular and versatile input device for musical interfaces. However, using the Kinect for such interfaces requires not only significant programming experience, but also the use of complex geometry or machine learning techniques to translate joint positions into higher level gestures. We created the Kinect Instrument Builder (KIB) to address these difficulties by structu...

Pen-based Interfaces in Engineering Environments

Conceptual design is usually done with paper and pen. Notepad computers open a new way for designing pen-based user interfaces for supporting such kind of design activities. However, pen-based user interfaces have some aws, such as the recognition rate of handwritten characters, the size of memory and display, which limits the application of such kind of computers. The main idea we have is to c...

Designing concurrent full-body gestures for intense gameplay

Full body gestures provide alternative input to video games that are more natural and intuitive. However, full-body game gestures designed by developers may not always be the most suitable gestures available. A key challenge in full-body game gestural interfaces lies in how to design gestures such that they accommodate the intensive, dynamic nature of video games, e.g., several gestures may nee...

Analysis of Laminated Soft Core Sandwich Plate Having Interfacial Imperfections by an Efficient C0 FE Model

An efficient C0 continuous two dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model is developed based on a refined higher order shear deformation theory (RHSDT) for the static analysis of soft core sandwich plate having imperfections at the layer interfaces. In this (RHSDT) theory, the in-plane displacement field for the face sheets and the core is obtained by superposing a globally varying cubic displa...
